Events
Honoring our Heritage in Akron
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, the staff of Camp Christopher in Akron, OH, honored the memory of Sister Mercedes Hohman (1896–1993) who created a sculpture of the Holy Family while ministering as a nurse at the camp each summer. Her original work was created from re-purposed utility poles. Unfortunately, the sculptures degraded in the weather. On Saturday, the staff dedicated the newly revisioned sculptures, which were created under the direction of Associate Mary O'Connor. Many former campers came to celebrate Sister's memory at the prayer service. Sr. Joanne Caniglia gave a brief presentation on Sr. Mercedes and the many Dominican Sisters who served the camp for over 30 years. Click here for an image of the new statues.
Associates' News
On Friday evening, August 2, and Saturday, August 3, 2024, twenty-six associates and sisters attended the annual Associate retreat at the Motherhouse in Great Bend, Kansas.
The retreat, entitled "Leave it to God - Let go of Yourself," focused on the wisdom of St. Catherine of Siena. Fr. Reggie Urban, a retired priest from the Dodge City Diocese, was the presenter.
Fr. Reggie shared his own love of St. Catherine of Siena, speaking of her immense love of God, her courage to lose herself on the Cross, her strength to constantly surrender herself to God's will, and her willingness to boldly proclaim the Truth.
As a bonus, Father Reggie included related words from St. Paul's authentic letters. St. Catherine referred to him as "my little Paul."
We animated the words of our sister Catherine by sharing our experiences in small groups and praying the Psalms.
