Peace & Justice Update
A Note from Sr. Gemma Doll at the Border
A second busy week at KINO, but we're still smiling.
Last Saturday KINO organized a play day and fiesta at a park. All the immigrants of the area and volunteers were invited. It took a lot of work, but to see all our immigrant and migrant neighbors mix with staff in a very social, normal way, all having fun, was worth it. The kids enjoyed a needed taste of normalcy for the day. Area restaurants donated pizza and sandwiches. What a treat for everyone!
I worked a first aid station, and of course, no one got hurt until after the Red Cross and Doctors left. Playing with the piñatas got a bit boisterous and we had cut fingers, splinters, and headaches. After a long day outside on my feet, I also worked the evening shift. I was tired but so grateful for a wonderful day.
The next day we invited a group from the State of Puebla to make carne asada tacos with all the trimmings. I helped cut meat and veggies. They were very careful with the hygiene of the food and preparation, so I ate it all. Yummy!
Afterwards, on Sunday evening folks enjoyed chips and soft drinks and just visited.
These and other events are just some of the efforts that the staff and volunteers at KINO make to create a humane and welcoming environment.
I ask that you pray for me and all of us ministering to these people in transition and pray that our leaders acknowledge and act to assist those coming to our nation for a better life.
