A Note from Sr. Gemma at the Border
Thank you for all your prayers during this month on the Border. Next Sunday is the World Day for Prayer for Refugees and Migrants. The number of displaced people today is higher than after World War II. Each one suffers physically, mentally, financially, and spiritually. From Matthew 25, “I was a stranger and you welcomed Me." Join me in prayer for true freedom and a path of hope for each one.
This past Monday, Mexico celebrated Independence Day. One of the Sisters at Kino spoke to the people, saying that in Mexico there is no “libertad," or independence. Drug cartels, gangs, and the Mafia have left people imprisoned in fear. Many have lost family members to violence. They have left homes and businesses to seek safety for their remaining children.
Last Monday, 45 people, many women and children, tried to ask for asylum at the Nogales border. Instead of following International Law, the US Border Patrol turned them back. We at Kino fed them lunch and gave shelter to the women and children. Single men were directed to other shelters. The look of despair and desperation could not be hidden from their faces, even in the midst of celebrating Independence Day. One mother from Oaxaca could hardly eat and tears brimmed in her eyes. Most of her family had just been killed. She fled with her daughter and a neighbor. She speaks an Indigenous language and understands only a little Spanish. I can’t even imagine her desolation.
Kino went to great lengths to celebrate Independence Day with music, a special meal of enchiladas in mole, dancing, cupcakes, and popcorn. The kids loved the dancing and toys. Two little boys, 2-years-old and 4-years-old, stopped my heart. They were all in - copying the movements of the women dancing. With all the extra people, we in the kitchen were rolling enchiladas as fast as they ate them. By the end we all were splattered with mole!

Prayer Requests
- Director of the Mohun Health Care Center April Queener, OPA, (Columbus, OH, april.queener@mohun.org), and the staff of Mohun Health Care Center ask everyone for prayer for new employee Alonzo Pannel after the death of his wife due to gun violence. Alonzo shares a 16-year-old son with his wife, named Ethan. As they navigate this sudden loss, they welcome prayer and comfort.
Updates/Notes of Gratitude
- The Ministry of Welcome Vocations team would like to thank our Sisters, Associates, and Staff who helped make last weekend’s Come & See retreat such a success. At our St. Catharine's Motherhouse, we welcomed five women, who came from Ohio, New York, Texas, and Virginia. These women heard about us in a variety of ways: One heard about the retreat from a flyer at ODU, we met another at the Dominican College Preaching Conference, one met Annie Killian through Pax Christi, one we met at a Parish event, and one discerner found us on the internet. Let's keep spreading the word and sharing the joy of religious life.
- Staff member Angela Panek (Great Bend, KS, angela.panek@oppeace.org) is blessed to share that her brother-in-law's exploratory surgery showed no sign of cancer - in fact, the spot they had seen in the scan was no longer there! Her family thanks all of you and most of all God for his blessing and miracle for her family.
